There are several instances where the black and white rules don't apply with every manufacturer. All the same "rules" for determining originality still apply. It would have to be done after actually inspecting the pistol in-hand and literally verifying the pistol is original. However, caution should be used when inspected or accepting a low-numbered Ithaca as an authentic double stamp. It also changes what might be the accepted serial ranges for the double-stamped pistols. Now, rather than roughly 30+K Du-Lite pistols, there may have been 1000-2000 fewer. An early Du-Lite Ithaca has always been much harder to find than a Remington rand or US&S. It means there were fewer Du-Lite Ithacas than we previously thought. If all this is true, that changes some things we've taken for granted over the past 20-25 years. The serial numbers had to be used, so that's what they did. But when 500+/- low serial numbers all show up at once, that would indicate to me those pistols (or receivers) produced earlier with the same numbers were ultimately scrapped. I'd say those pistols probably had repaired parts. The shipping records do periodically show a few early numbers scattered into shipments throughout 1943. I think that was due to the fact they had so many problems in the beginning. We've known for several years Ithaca did not ship in strict sequential order until early 1944. Although I've never seen another Ithaca with this low of a serial number documented as shipped so late, I strongly suspect the majority of those low numbered pistols shipped in Oct/Nov 1943 were new pistols simply using up serial numbers that were assigned to Ithaca. While the vast majority of Ithacas in the 864xxx range were shipped in early 1943, I did some research and found about 500+/- pistols with serial numbers below 865000 shipped in October and November '43. It just has an early (low) serial number. I displays all the manufacturing characteristics of an October '43 pistol. I don't think this receiver was repaired.
